The Effect of Oral Supplementation of Cinnamon on Weight Loss and Blood Pressure in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

Abstract

Background

Cinnamon has a long history as a flavoring additive and a drug in traditional medicine. Several studies have been carried out on the effects of cinnamon in the control of blood glucose and insulin resistance among diabetes patients. Predominantly, overweight, obesity and hypertension are common in patients with type 2  diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cinnamon powder on weight loss and blood pressure in patients with type 2  diabetes.

Methods

This study was a randomized, double blind clinical trial conducted on 81 patients with type 2  diabetes for the city of Maku, Iran recruited based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria set for the study. Patients were randomly divided into 3 groups: taking two cinnamon capsule 500 milligrams (n=27), four cinnamon capsule 500 milligrams (n=28), and placebo (n=26). The study lasted for 3 months. The biochemical parameters, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and body fat and lean mass were measured at the baseline and the end of the study. SPSS version 16 was used for statistical analysis.

Results

Eighty-one patients with diabetes participated in this study. The mean age of participants was 51.73±6.40. Weight, BMI, and WC revealed a decreasing trend in groups receiving lower and higher doses of cinnamon in comparison with prior to the supplementation, which was in the threshold of significance level in the low-dose group (P=0.05) and significant in the group receiving high doses of cinnamon (P= 0.009).

Waist circumference revealed a statistically significant decrease in both groups receiving cinnamon compared to prior to the intervention. Significant statistical differences were observable comparing the variations in the values among 3 groups pre- and post- intervention in terms of weight (P=0.03), BMI (P=0.02), WC (P=0.02), Fat tissue mass (P=0.03), and lean tissue mass (P=0.04). There was no significant difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure pre- and post- intervention.

Conclusion

The findings of this study showed that supplementation with dietary cinnamon powder in patients with Type 2 diabetes can be attributable to a significant decrease in weight loss, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat and lean mass compared to a placebo which advocates for further studies in this field.
